The Alpharetta Planning Commission has voted 7-0 to recommend rejection of a building expansion request by the Islamic Worship Center of North Fulton.
The Islamic group wants to tear down its 2,500-square-foot building used for worship and replace it with a 1,900-square-foot multi-purpose facility and a 12,000-square-foot structure. The headquarters would contain a prayer area, library, offices and gymnasium.
Congregation leaders say the worship center needs to modernize.
Residents of nearby subdivisions complained the project was too big for its lot and would create traffic congestion.
The commission’s major objection Thursday night was that Islamic leaders wanted to back out of agreements to keep existing buildings.
