Westside Middle School shot a 192 and finished one stroke ahead of New Hope in the Whitfield County Middle School Athletic League tournament on Monday at Indian Trace Golf Course in Chatsworth.

Meanwhile, New Hope claimed low medalist honors in both boys and girls competition, with Payton Kell’s 9-over par 45 winning the boys individual title and Sarah Kate Fearing shooting a 53 to take the girls crown.

Westside’s Dylan Woods was third low medalist as he carded a 47 to lead the Rockets, who also got counting scores from Tyler Roberts (47), Trevor Goodman (48) and Gentry Bell (50) in the five-team event.

“I can’t single any of them out, but Dylan has been playing No. 1 for us all three years,” Westside coach Scott Cook said. “He’s a special young man. They all are.”

New Hope’s other boys scores came from Silas Ledford (49), Will Patterson (49) and Wesley York (50).

“Payton was a complete surprise for us because he was our fifth-seeded golfer coming in,” New Hope coach John Linder said. “He shot in the 40s for the first time, but he’s had great work habits all year so it’s great see him excel on a day like this.

“Sarah Kate’s continually got better this year and I think this was her lowest score. They’re both hard workers, so you’re always proud to be out there with them.”

Valley Point claimed second low medalist honors in both boys and girls competition, with Ryan Collins (46) and Megan Collins (53) taking those respective honors.

Westside’s Taylor Boyd was third low medalist among girls, who did not have a team competition in the event.
