• The Antioch Baptist Church Teens host a cornhole tournament at Antioch Baptist Church on Saturday, July 13, from 8 a.m. to noon. Entry fee is $40 per team (teams of two people only). • The Murray County Singing Convention, designated this session as the R.S. Thomas Memorial Singing after the beloved singer, leader and promoter of convention-style gospel music, is Saturday at Smyrna Baptist Church on Smyrna Church Road south of Chatsworth. There will be food at 5:30 p.m. while the music begins at 6:30. The evening features congregational singing of the newest gospel songs and some specials, but will also include some old favorites in tribute to Thomas. An offering will be received for the R.S. Thomas Music Scholarship Fund. The Rev. Andrew Bowen, pastor, invites all those who knew R.S. and/or love this music to attend. Riverbend Church of Christ opens a benevolent house each Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for area residents in need. Individuals can choose from a variety of clothing, shoes, household items and more at no charge. The ministry is in the white house beside the church building at 2218 S. Riverbend Road. To donate items, drop them off during operating hours or leave them on the front porch. Tax receipts are available.

• Christians Under Construction, a practical, biblical discussion of Christian living, meets each Friday at 7 p.m. at True Gospel Holiness Church. The facilitator is Elder Randell O’Neal. The idea is to answer questions and help each Christian live a more perfect and peaceful life. The church is at 109 S. Henderson St.

Valley Brook Church of God holds a school backpack giveaway on Saturday, July 20, in the parking lot between Walgreens and Bruster's Real Ice Cream on Dug Gap Road. Church members will hand out school backpacks filled with supplies and other items to school-aged children from low income families. The event is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., or until all of the backpacks are gone.
