• On Sunday at 4 p.m., the Chancel Choir of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, under the leadership of Beth Nichols, organist and director of music, will offer a service of Choral Evensong in celebration of the Feast of All Saints. One of the principal events in Christian liturgy’s annual cycle, All Saints commemorates everyone who has died in the faith, especially those closest to living members of the congregation and the wider community who have passed on during the preceding year. Evensong is a musical setting of the service of Daily Evening Prayer, which has been offered nearly every day for almost 500 years in the cathedrals and many of the larger churches in England, and often in Episcopal churches in America as well. There is no sermon, and the scripture texts, prayers and music are specially selected to prompt contemplation and meditation over the events of the day, encouraging an awareness of God’s caring presence and a sense of tranquility in preparation for the coming night. The service at St. Mark’s will include music by composers Tallis, Scholefield, Alcock, Baynon, Vaughn Williams, Arlen Clarke, David Hurd and Hal Hopson. All are invited, and all are welcome.
