Make A Difference Day is the most encompassing national day of helping others, a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. Everyone can participate.

Created by USA Weekend Magazine, Make A Difference Day is an annual event that takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October. Because of the popularity of this event, the United Way of Northwest Georgia will host projects on Friday, Oct. 25, and Saturday, Oct. 26.

There are currently three volunteer opportunities that anyone can sign up for. To volunteer, visit www.volunteernwga.org/aem/general/event/?doc_id=5519. The link has all the information for each of the volunteer projects.

The volunteers will meet at the location of each of the agencies. The Big Brothers Big Sisters, GreenHouse and American Red Cross should have everything that volunteers will need for the project. Volunteers should wear clothes that can be worked in and comfortable shoes, preferably tennis shoes.

The projects are:

• The GreenHouse child advocacy center. Friday and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Meeting location: When you sign up to volunteer the address will be sent to you. The volunteers will construct a closet that holds plain clothing for victims who are asked to leave their clothing behind for evidentiary purposes.

• Big Brothers Big Sisters. Friday, 9 a.m. until finished. Meeting location: Big Brothers Big Sisters, 209 Morris St., Dalton. Volunteers will spend the day doing basic landscaping work: paint the walkway, cut grass, weed, parking lot cleanup, paint the lobby and remove and apply vinyl decals.

• Sound the Alarm, Save A Life. Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Meeting location: United Way, 816 S. Thornton Ave. in Dalton. The United Way and the Dalton Fire Department are teaming up with the American Red Cross of Northwest Georgia to improve fire safety in the communities most at risk. Teams will canvass neighborhoods to educate residents on fire safety and install smoke alarms at no charge. Spanish speakers needed.
