Community organizations are planning the seventh annual "Memorial Day Community Celebration." This free event is on Memorial Day, May 27.

A prelude band concert by the Dalton-Whitfield Community Band begins at 9:30 a.m. The memorial service, provided by the local American Legion Post 112, begins at 10 a.m. in front of the Whitfield County Courthouse. The program includes music by the Dalton-Whitfield Community Band, posting of the colors by the Dalton police and fire departments honor guards, a guest speaker and laying of the wreaths.

Family activities and food (free hot dogs, chips and snacks, while supplies last) are available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Dalton Green. This part of the event includes music, inflatables, face painting, a Touch-a-Truck station, pet adoptions, information for veterans, blood pressure checks and other activities -- all with a patriotic theme.

On the day of the event, street closures will include: Selvidge Street from Waugh Street to Crawford Street; King Street from Pentz Street to Selvidge Street; and Crawford Street from Thornton Avenue to Selvidge Street.
