Recently, more than 350 racers for the Georgia Jewel lined up at Burr Performing Arts Park to register for the weekend long run.

The Georgia Jewel is a 100-mile race through the Pinhoti Trail system in Dalton organized by Jenny Baker and her husband Franklin, drawing runners, families and guests from near and far. The trail run brought in visitors from 30 states to Dalton, from as far as Colorado, Hawaii, New York and Wisconsin and representation from four countries including Canada, Ecuador and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Not only do sports tourism events like the Georgia Jewel create a positive economic impact on Dalton-Whitfield with visitors staying and eating in area hotels and restaurants, Jenny Baker and her team believe in buying and sourcing all supplies locally -- donating any remaining, unopened food and drinks to the food bank at Providence Ministries in Dalton.
