The Whitfield County Retired School Administrators recently honored Ken Hilliard for his military service. Patricia Defore of the Summerville chapter of Quilts of Valor presented Hilliard with a beautiful handmade quilt. Hilliard, 91, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He is a former coach and principal at North Whitfield Middle School.
D.O. Chumley, former superintendent, will receive his quilt soon. He is 98 and served in the U.S. Army and the Tennessee National Guard. Former assistant superintendent James Spence, 92, with military service at the close of World War II and immediately afterward, was honored at an earlier event at Five Springs United Methodist Church.
Spence's daughter, Janice Wilmot, is a retired nurse from the U.S. Air Force and a member of the Quilts of Valor. The organization, founded in 2003, has presented almost a quarter of a million military veterans with a special handmade quilt in appreciation of their service to the country. Volunteer sewing groups are active in all 50 states. Additional retired Whitfield County Schools administrators who served in the military in the 1940s and 1950s will be honored in upcoming weeks.
