Used eyeglasses help less fortunate see clearly

Dalton Lions Club officials said they are grateful to all the ophthalmologists, optometrists and many others who collect used eyeglasses. So far this year, more than 1,800 pairs of eyeglasses have been collected.

These glasses are then shipped to the Georgia Lions Lighthouse in Decatur where they are checked for their prescription and stored until they are sent to underdeveloped countries. When received, they are given to needy men, women and children who otherwise would not own a pair of glasses.

If you are interested in having an eyeglass collection box at your business, contact any Dalton Lions Club member. Some of the helpful organizations include Affordable Vision, Braun Eye Care Center, Dalton Optometry, Oakwood Cafe, Pearl Vision, Professional Eye Associates and Walmart Vision.

Dalton Lions Club members are selling tickets for their $10,000 giveaway at the North Georgia Fairgrounds on Nov. 23. Tickets are $100 each, which entitles the holder to two steak dinners with sides. This will be a reverse draw-down where the last ticket drawn is the winner. Door prizes are also awarded throughout the drawing. Giveaway proceeds are used to buy glasses for schoolchildren and indigent adults in Dalton and Whitfield County. The club also sponsors kids to the camp as well as the Georgia Lions Camp for the Blind and Leader Dogs for the Blind.

For more information about the giveaway or the eyeglass collection boxes, contact Ed Shiver at (706) 913-5955 or any Dalton Lions Club member.
