September was Recovery Month, and several agencies in Whitfield County celebrated with the 12th Annual Chili Cook-Off on Sept. 27, hosted by the Conasauga Drug Court on the Dalton Green next to the courthouse. Recovery Month promotes the societal benefits of prevention, treatment and recovery for mental and substance use disorders; celebrates people in recovery; lauds the contributions of treatment and service providers; and promotes the message that recovery in all its forms is possible. Recovery Month spreads the positive message that behavioral health is essential to overall health, that prevention works, treatment is effective and people can and do recover. Local partners included Advanced Creative Solutions Counseling Services, Alcoholics Anonymous, All Counties DUI School, Association of Recovering Motorcyclists, Benchmark Human Service Team, Carter Hope Center, Celebrate Recovery Liberty, Clinical Evaluation -- W. Danny Parker, Conasauga Drug Court, Dalton Print Shop, Dalton State College, Georgia HOPE, Highland Rivers Gilmer, Innervention, Narcotics Anonymous, Northwest Day Reporting Center, Overcomers Outreach, Project Destiny, Providence Rescue Ministries, Providence Women's Recovery, Pirate Springs, Rock Bridge Recovery, Quality Staffing, Teen Challenge, Whitfield Intensive Outpatient Services and Women's Outreach Rome. Dozens of people turned out to enjoy a free chili lunch, door prizes and music. Winners included Best Tent Decoration: Conasauga Drug Court; Best Overall Chili: Carter Hope Center; Most Original Chili: Providence Ministries; Spiciest Chili: Overcomers Outreach; and People's Choice: Women's Outreach.
