When the TV ad appeared showing a grief-stricken mother urging the public not to vote for a state attorney general candidate, the Georgia primary season took a sharp turn.
It’s an eye-catching spot in a state known for tough political ads.
Kenneth Walker’s mother, Emily, is featured in the 30-second spot for Democratic state Rep. Rob Teilhet. She criticizes Teilhet’s opponent Ken Hodges for failing to secure a grand jury indictment against the deputy who shot and killed her unarmed son.
Hodges presented the case to a grand jury in 2004 and told his co-counsel he would bring it back if there was new evidence. Hodges says it’s “disgusting” to use a family’s grief for political purposes.
Teilhet defends the ad, saying Hodges is running on his experience and the Walker case is part of Hodges’ record.
