The driver of an 18-wheeler was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta Friday afternoon following a two-vehicle accident on I-75 near Rocky Face.
Whitfield County 911 says the first call came in about 2:35 p.m.
Trooper Scott Parker with the Georgia State Patrol said the 18-wheeler was traveling north on I-75 in the middle lane when a pickup truck in front of it came to a sudden stop. The driver of the 18-wheeler veered into the right hand lane to avoid the pickup, clipping the rear end of a box truck. The 18-wheeler then left the road and caught fire. Investigators aren't sure why the driver of the pickup stopped.
Parker said the driver of the 18-wheeler was a 33-year-old man but could not release further details on his identity pending notification of the driver's relatives. He said the extent of his injuries were not known but he did suffer burns. No one else was injured. The investigation is ongoing.
