A body found Sunday in northwestern Gordon County has been identified as a Chatsworth man missing since Jan. 16, according to Gordon County Sheriff Mitch Ralston.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation state crime lab identified the body as Caleb Nathaniel Smith, 21, of 4673 Old Federal Road. Family members reported Smith missing to the sheriff's office on Jan. 16 after his automobile and personal items were found at a truck stop in Resaca.
"Both ground and aerial searches of the area surrounding the truck stop by deputies on the 16th and 17th of January had yielded no results," Ralston said. "Although the GBI autopsy revealed no indications of violence or evidence of foul play, the cause and manner of death have yet to be determined. Investigating officers will now await the pending toxicology results from the postmortem examination."
A citizen discovered the body in a "poorly drained, heavily overgrown area," Ralston said. Deputies were sent to an area between the Sugar Valley and Hill City communities in response to the body being found. Firefighters had earlier been sent to that general area because of a brushfire.
