Members of the Dalton-Whitfield Economic Development Authority said Tuesday they were happy that SW Manufacturing has chosen to expand its Dalton auto parts plant, adding 60-70 jobs.

Authority members voted in April to recommend local governments extend any economic development incentives they may adopt to SW Manufacturing.

“That resolution was very instrumental in bringing this expansion,” said authority chairman David Mansfield during the authority’s monthly meeting.

The authority has committed itself to having an incentive proposal for the Dalton City Council and Whitfield County Board of Commissioners to consider by the end of the year.

“We don’t feel we can do that without the advice of existing businesses,” said authority director Melanie Suggs.

The authority will be doing a survey later this year of existing businesses. The survey is currently being developed by its business advisory council.

“We want to find out what allows them to grow here, and what may keep them from growing here,” Suggs said.

The first phase is expected to involve eight to 10 of the county’s largest employers. The second phase will involve 100 smaller businesses.
