Law enforcement officials do not have any suspects in Friday night’s shooting that left a young man dead, said Whitfield County Sheriff Scott Chitwood on Sunday.

Thomas Dexter Canavan, of Jackson, Ga., who was in his late teens or early 20s, was shot once in the chest in the parking lot of Galaxy Bowl on Cleveland Highway when two males tried to rob him and his friends, Chitwood said.

“We had four white young men in a vehicle that were approached by two black males,” he said. “What is being reported is an attempted robbery by the black males of the white males. A short exchange occurred and a black man fired a shot.

“Since they (four white males) were all in the vehicle, they just immediately drove to the emergency room” at Hamilton Medical Center, he said.

Canavan, who was in town visiting a college roomate, died during surgery at Hamilton Medical Center.

Chitwood said he does not have a description of the black male, but “hopes to have an update” today.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 706-278-1233.
