The Conasauga Bar Association will celebrate Law Day and an open house at the new addition of the Whitfield County Courthouse on Thursday at 2 p.m.

The Law Day program will be held at the new front entrance of the courthouse, weather permitting. In the event of rain, the program will be held on the third level of the courthouse.

Law Day festivities will include comments by those involved with planning the new courthouse as well as guest speaker Justice Robert Benham of the Georgia Supreme Court. The Liberty Bell Award will also be presented. It is awarded annually to an individual in recognition of his or her contribution to justice and the judicial system in Whitfield County.

Immediately following the ceremony, the public will be invited to see the new addition to the courthouse where various offices and court facilities will be open to the public.

Curtis Kleem, president of the Conasauga Bar Association, led this year’s Law Day committee.

“We have a Law Day program every year to help educate the public about the legal system in this area,” said Kleem. “This year is special with the new courthouse. This will be a great opportunity for the public to see the new parts of the courthouse and also hear a distinguished jurist from the highest court in our state.”

“We are very excited about the new courthouse,” said Sam Gowin, vice president of the Conasauga Bar. “The new building will include the Juvenile, Magistrate, Probate and the Superior Courts, as well as the district attorney’s offices, the clerk of Superior Court and the court administrator’s offices. It will be really convenient for folks to have all these services under the same roof.”

The Conasauga Bar Association includes Whitfield and Murray counties and exists to foster among the members of the bar of both counties the principles of duty and service to the public; to improve the administration of justice; and to advance the science of law. The association currently has approximately 120 members.
