A small earthquake hit the Westside in Whitfield County early Monday morning.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), a 2.4 magnitude earthquake happened about 4.3 miles west-northwest of Dalton at about 12:16 a.m. on Monday. The survey's website does not list earthquakes of less than a 2.5 magnitude on its main earthquake update, so visitors to the website would have to search to find out about the quake.
"911 didn't get any calls, nor reports of damage," said Whitfield County Emergency Management Agency Deputy Director Jeff Ownby.
"We didn't get anything from the USGS. I didn't know anything about it until I talked to some people from Rocky Face who said it woke them up," Ownby added. "I started digging, and I believe the epicenter was near Westside Elementary School."
