Margaret Kinnamon announced her retirement as Varnell city clerk in 2004, but she didn’t quite get to leave when she planned to, said city manager Ralph Morgan.

“She stayed around to help us until we had a clerk and to help that clerk get acquainted with things. She really didn’t leave until July 2005,” Morgan said.

That’s why the city is just getting around to throwing a retirement reception for Kinnamon this Sunday, from 2 to 5 p.m., in the Varnell city gymnasium.

“She’s well-deserving of a party,” said Morgan.

Kinnamon served as Varnell’s first, and only, clerk for some 38 years.

“And she never took one red cent, not one penny for any of the work she did,” said Morgan.

That’s why Varnell residents, friends and anyone else who wishes to honor Kinnamon is invited to the reception.
