'Very appreciative for all the veterans'

The Veterans Day Parade travels on West Waugh Street on Saturday.

Brave. That's what 8-year-old Dellyn Walston thinks about the men and women who serve our country.

Dellyn and her family were one of many that gathered Saturday morning in downtown Dalton to watch the North Georgia Veterans Day Parade.

Dellyn said her parade favorites were the Southeast Whitfield High School Band and getting candy.

Don Stuart has been coming to the parade for years.

An Army veteran himself, Stuart said a lot of people don't realize the sacrifices that were made for their freedom.

"I'm glad to have served my country," said the 82-year-old who served from 1953 to 1957 as a paratrooper. "I was lucky to come home to my family. The ones that didn't, their family felt that pain," he said.

Stuart believes every young person should serve in some way.

"They have too many other things on their mind," he said. "They need to be productive in doing something."

He said he enjoys watching his grandson march with Dalton High School's Junior ROTC.

"This parade is an important event not only for veterans, but the entire community," Stuart said.

Barry and Gayle Minish came out to watch the parade.

"We want to support veterans for what they have done for us," Barry Minish said. "They left their homes and families to provide freedom and safety for us as American citizens."

He said attending the parade is a away to show thanks and support.

"We are very appreciative for all the veterans," Gayle Minish said.

Gary Benson serves on the Honor Guard for Post 112 American Legion in Dalton. Benson was named Veteran of the Year.

"Veteran of the Year recognizes what you do for other veterans like run errands and spend time helping them," Benson, a Navy veteran from Dalton, said.

After leading the American Legion in the parade, he joined others along the side of the road to watch.

"I enjoy the parade a lot. I like watching it, I'm just taking it all in."
