In February, Avery Nicholas Cronan led officers on a high-speed car chase through Murray and Whitfield counties before crashing his car in a pond in Varnell and getting away on foot, according to Varnell police.

Wednesday morning, Varnell police officers found Cronan, 28, of Cronan Drive in Varnell, walking down Cleveland Highway and arrested him on charges of fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement officers, obstruction and reckless driving.

Murray County police started the chase in February. The chase wound its way down Highway 2 into Whitfield County, where Varnell police began their pursuit.

“It was dusky dark and (Cronan) went down Cronan Road and ran his car into a pond and got out on foot and ran into the woods,” Varnell Police Chief Tim Henderson said.

At times, the cars were traveling more than 80 mph in 55 mph zones, Henderson said.

Cronan was wanted on nine counts of entering an automobile for a series of automobile break-ins in Whitfield County. He remained in the Whitfield County Jail Wednesday evening.
