A woman accused of accepting gifts, money and other forms of charity after telling people she had terminal cancer pleaded not guilty to theft charges in Whitfield County Superior Court Thursday morning.

Pam Allen, 40, of 715 Red Clay Road, Cleveland, is charged with three counts of felony theft by deception and three counts of misdemeanor theft by deception.

Dalton police said Allen did not have cancer but was telling people she only had a short time to live so that she could receive the gifts.

Allen made similar claims of poor health at a church in Chattanooga in 2001, Dalton Police spokesman Chris McDonald said last year.

Allen, who told Judge Cindy Morris she does not have an attorney, is scheduled back in court on June 18 for calendar call before her scheduled June 25 trial.

If convicted, Allen could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison on each felony count.
