Editorial: Friendship House Music Festival benefits an important part of our community

Dalton's Friendship House has been an important part of this community for some 62 years, first in addressing the needs of residents living in Happy Top, a poverty-stricken area of Dalton near Waugh Street, and now as a child care center, learning center and preschool with the belief that "each child possesses unique abilities, talents and needs." Friendship House seeks to "benefit each child emotionally, mentally, physically and socially."

To further that work, the fourth annual Friendship House Music Festival is Saturday from 4 to 11 p.m. All festival proceeds go to support Friendship House.

The headliner is Jupiter Coyote, a 27-year-old group whose style has been described as mountain rock for their mix of Southern Appalachian boogie, bluegrass-infused funk rock. Other acts on the Shaw Industries Stage at Dalton Green in downtown Dalton will be Allgood, a classic 1990s blues-rock band featuring Dalton natives Clay Fuller and Mike Sain; The Band of Heathens, described as "a group striving to infuse a spirit of brotherhood, hope and understanding, liberty and justice for all into their covers"; and thE Core-Clapton Live, a group of music veterans, including Fuller, who "focus on the exploration of the timeless catalog of rock legend Eric Clapton."

There will be food trucks, "a giant" Jenga game, cornhole, a playground and from 3 to 6 p.m. a Create and Play Studio for children. Tickets are general admission, $25; student admission, $15; and VIP admission, $50. The VIP Experience includes one event ticket; exclusive food offerings; on-site, air-conditioned bathrooms; a signature welcome drink; access to a VIP bar; stage viewing and an electronics charging station.

We salute the sponsors of the festival -- Dalton Plastic Surgery, Dalton Utilities, Mohawk Industries, Shaw Industries and Textile Rubber & Chemical Co. -- and encourage you to support Friendship House by attending the festival if you can. You will get to hear some good live music, perhaps see or make new friends, enjoy some good food and activities, all the while supporting Friendship House, which offers important services to the families and children of our community.
