Since Tuesday, the floorcovering has been front and center during the biennial Floor Tek Expo at the Dalton Convention Center.
Sponsored by the Dalton-based American Floorcovering Alliance, the trade show features cutting-edge technology and advancements that flooring and flooring-related companies have created.
This isn't your grandfather's floorcovering trade show. Or your father's. We're talking manufacturers of robotics, machines and other equipment from across the United States and from around the world on display here in the Carpet Capital of the World.
The first Floor Tek took place in Dalton as a regular carpet show, but the focus changed to showcasing technology in the industry in the 1990s. This year, in honor of AFA's 40th anniversary, the group extended an invitation to floorcovering manufacturers to return to the expo.
More than 85 exhibitors attended this year, with some 30% of them as first-timers.
There was also an educational element to this year's Floor Tek. Adrienne McCurdy, director or student success and campus manager and Georgia Northwestern Technical College, spoke to industry officials and members of the public about the college's programs that can prepare workers for a career in the floorcovering industry.
"We've got several new programs," she said. "For instance, our flooring production operator certificate and flooring production technician certificate. We also have an automation engineering technology associate's degree. We have also recently moved our precision manufacturing program to the Dalton campus."
Flook Tek reaffirms Dalton's status as a major manufacturing center in Georgia, and also in the entire South. The expo is a great way to show off the innovation that happens throughout the entire floorcovering, with many of those advancements being done by local residents right here in Dalton.
Floor Tek continues today from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the convention center. We hope you have a chance to drop in and see the future of the floorcovering industry.
