Ryan Darville was convicted of murder on Friday, a 12-person jury returning a unanimous verdict after less than four hours of deliberation.

Darville was convicted of killing 19-year-old Tommy Canavan during a drug deal on July 7. He was sentenced to life imprisonment and won’t be eligible for parole for 30 years.

Darville family members denounced the verdict as unjust and local NAACP chairman Michael Council criticized the racial composition of the jury, which was all-white.

But it's hard to imagine that any disinterested witness who sat through the five-day trial would not have come to the same conclusion as the one reached by this jury. Ample evidence to convict was there and the jury acted honorably.

The death of Tommy Canavan is an unspeakable waste; as is the life of a free man Ryan Darville forfeited when he chose to take out a gun in a penny ante drug deal.

Justice is not finished here. Six other young fools await sentencing for their part in the nightmarish activities which left the Canavan and Darville families stricken with grief, a young man in prison for at least 30 years and another dying in the seat of his friend's car.

The sheer stupidity of it all is mind numbing.
