Letter: 'Appalled' by commission chair's comments

I was appalled by the comments of our Whitfield County Board of Commissioners Chairman Lynn Laughter regarding SPLOST opponents. She must realize that in her elected position, she should serve all citizens of Whitfield County, not just those who agree with her politically. Further, it is unacceptable for an elected official to make derogatory attacks against constituents who she personally disagrees with.

I must question Ms. Laughter's qualifications as commission chairman. If I understand her math, a 1% sales tax is an increase only if it raises taxes from 7% to 8%. An increase from 6% to 7% should not be considered an increase because, in her mind, that is the standard rate that everyone should accept. Further, one should note that in the meetings prior to the SPLOST vote, Ms. Laughter could not make a credible argument in favor of the SPLOST. She did not know enough about her own proposal to justify a positive vote.

Ms. Laughter's argument seems to be just give me the money and I'll find a way to spend it. Don't confuse me with sensible alternatives.

Whitfield County deserves better than Ms. Laughter can deliver. It is time for her to resign her position.
