Graves should take stand on impeachment
I'm writing due to my concern in regards to U.S. Rep. Tom Graves's viewpoint on the Office of Special Counsel's report concerning Russian interference in the 2016 elections and the question of obstruction by elected and non-elected officials.
Based on reading the report and Special Counsel Robert Mueller's recent public comments, it is clear that the ethical option is for Congress to begin the impeachment process for President Donald Trump. While I understand our district votes for Republicans by a 3-to-1 margin and supporting the impeachment process might cause difficulty in the 2020 election, it is important that our district be provided the opportunity to publicly hear officials discuss the evidence that has been provided.
If the president is innocent of attempting to obstruct justice and other crimes, then the impeachment process provides the opportunity for Georgia's 14th Congressional District to be reassured of his innocence. As a Graves constituent, I'm asking that Graves offer public support of the impeachment process. This process will allow for an end to the ongoing public speculation that continues to inhibit Congress from acting effectively for the American people.
If, however, Graves feels that the impeachment process will demonstrate unethical or illegal behavior by the president and this outlook prevents him from supporting the impeachment process due to political reasons, then Georgia's 14th District must be tasked with questioning his personal ethics in 2020.
