The problem is not guns! It's the hearts without God, homes without prayer and courts without justice.
The greatest cause of collapse in our society is the breakdown of the family unit. We can't even define family anymore.
I've been in education for the past 20 years. I am a mother of four and grandmother of three. I will admit I don't have all of the answers, but I do have the answer: Jesus Christ!
I want to say we are a privileged community. The Dalton city, Whitfield County and Christian Heritage School systems are all strong academically. They have some of the best teachers, administrators and staff in the area.
Unless one has worked in an educational system, I struggle with comments made on what's wrong with our schools.
The educational system was not set up to raise anyone's child. It has for some unknown reason been expected to provide students transportation to and from school, feed them breakfast and lunch, discipline, counsel, teach them to make the right choices, comfort, protect and educate them.
It's almost impossible to stress academics when a lot of the students being served come from homes that do none of the above.
It makes little sense to push academics when a lot of the students have a difficult time functioning emotionally.
If we want to make a difference, start with the self. We must make better choices in all that we do. Stop and think before we act or speak. Put others before self and stop playing the "blame game."
Support your local school system. Pray for the school board, administrators and staff. Volunteer, be a substitute teacher or just be available to serve.
Help all of our students become successful. Praise when warranted, discipline when needed, correct and encourage always with a loving and forgiving spirit.
After all, "Be the change you want to see," is good advice for all of us.
