For the first time in five years, the North Georgia Invitational title belongs to someone not named David Noll Jr.

Following up a strong first round, Seth Brandon shot a final round of 3-under par 69 at Dalton Golf and Country Club on Sunday, winning the NGI and breaking Noll’s longstanding grip on the tournament in the process.

Brandon finished at 7-under 137 for the 36-hole event, three strokes ahead of runner-up Thomas Hagler. Noll and Chris Hall — who was one of three to card a 69 on Sunday — tied for third at 142. Matt Hughes finished even and was fifth.

For Brandon, a former Dalton and Baylor golfer who just completed his freshman season at Indiana University, it was a good weekend — and he considered it no small feat to hold off a golfer like Noll at DGCC.

“It was really good to compete with him,” Brandon said. “And anybody who’s been that consistent and that solid out here, you know when you can beat him you’ve done pretty well.”

Noll’s four straight is a tourney record and he was going for sole possession of the mark for most wins at five.

Brandon, who started the day alone at the top and a stroke ahead, credited a good start and solid finish on Sunday with helping him secure the title — along with a good bit of self-confidence.

“I was two under through three holes, which was important to me,” Brandon said. “To go ahead and get a little distance was good.”

The weekend was also good practice, Brandon said, for his effort today as he attempts to qualify for the state amateur tourney with a round at Coosa Country Club in Rome. Brandon estimated there will be 100 golfers competing today for 19 spots in the tourney, which is set for mid-July.
