High school basketball: Two local teams play in the Sweet Sixteen tonight

Two area high school basketball teams get a taste of the Sweet Sixteen tonight with hopes of advancing to the Elite Eight.

The second round of the Georgia High School Association state basketball playoffs continue with the Northwest Whitfield High School girls and the Christian Heritage School boys in action.

Boys

Class A Private: Trinity Christian at Christian Heritage School, 6:30 p.m.

Christian Heritage (20-4) plays its first game in more than two weeks as the Lions take on Trinity Christian (18-10) out of Sharpsburg in the Sweet Sixteen.

The Lions had a bye last weekend in the opening round of the playoffs, and last played Feb. 5 in a loss to Walker in the Region 6-A tournament. Last week, Trinity Christian beat Athens Christian, 65-43, in the first round of the playoffs.

Christian Heritage is No. 4 while Trinity Christian is No. 10 in the GHSA Class A Private Power Rankings, a formula used to determine playoff seeding.

Girls

Class 4A: McDonough at Northwest Whitfield, 6 p.m.

The Lady Bruins (22-7) host their second-straight playoff game as they welcome McDonough (16-12) to Tunnel Hill.

In the opening round of the playoffs last week, Northwest beat Madison County, 52-46, while McDonough beat Perry, 66-40.
