Area high school golfers were in full swing Tuesday during the final day of their respective state tournaments, with one team and one individual coming out on top.
The Christian Heritage School boys golf team won the Class A-Private state championship at Green Island Country Club in Columbus, while Murray County High School senior Tori Owens won her second consecutive Class 3A individual title at Arrowhead Pointe Golf Course in Elberton.
The title for the Lions came after they were tied for second following the first round of the tournament on Monday. They finished with a team score of 585 (+17), bettering Brookstone's final score of 587 (+19). Christian Heritage had a solid day of 289 (+5) on Tuesday to edge out the win.
"I knew coming into the final round we had a chance, but I also knew it was going to be close," Christian Heritage coach Chad Jordan said. "It was just a matter of how the other kids were playing."
Jack Stafford led the Lions with an even score of 142, while Mason Cady finished with a 145 (+3), Hardin Chambless finished with a score of 147 (+5), Will Hooper finished at 153 (+11), Tucker Jordan finished at 158 (+16) and Andrew Jenkins had a score of 163 (+21).
Being one stroke behind on Monday, Chad Jordan said he wasn't trying to do any guesswork when the final group came in. When the final scores were posted, that's when they knew they were champions.
"It was jubilation. We were all hugging each other, and parents were crying," he said.
Owens finished the two-day tournament with a score of 145 (+1). She was in the lead by four strokes after Monday's even round of 72, but told her parents she didn't want to know.
"I'm glad that's done, honestly," Owens said. "I kind of put some stress on myself. But after Monday, I felt good. It was a pretty solid round, I knew I did the best I could."
Owens finished the tournament seven stokes ahead of the second-place golfer.
"It was basically two days of solid play," she said. "It being my last year, I got to accomplish a lot more things than I ever thought would be possible in my high school career. It felt good to end it that way."
North Murray High School sophomore Gage Winkler finished third individually Tuesday at the Class 3A state tournament at Cateechee Golf Club in Hartwell. Winkler finished with a score of 146 (+2) for the two-day tournament.
"He's always one you don't have to worry about," North Murray coach Cody Rainey said. "He's got to be the hardest working kid on the course."
Rainey said by the time next year rolls around, Winkler hopes to win it all.
"That's one of his major goals," he said. "He really wants that ring."
