Northwest Whitfield 4, Coahulla Creek 2
The Northwest Whitfield High School Lady Bruins won an extra-innings matchup at cross-county rival Coahulla Creek on Saturday, 4-2.
The teams were tied at two at the end of seven innings. In the top of the eighth, the Lady Bruins (10-0, 2-0 in Region 6-4A) scored two runs while the Lady Colts (4-4, 0-2 in Region 6-3A) were held scoreless in the bottom half of the inning. Three straight bunt singles followed by a walk and a single yielded the two runs for Northwest.
"Neither team had much success at the plate," Northwest coach Todd Middleton said. "We were able to manufacture some runs and get the win."
Coahulla Creek's Sophia Voyles pitched the entire game, giving up three earned runs while striking out 11.
Three Northwest pitchers (Alex Smith, Destin Jewell and Shaylen Sutton) threw at least two innings, and Middleton said they were effective in getting out of jams with runners in scoring position.
Coahulla Creek senior catcher MiKayla Teems hit a solo home run.
