It was a happy Homecoming for the Dalton State College Roadrunners basketball team.
The No.6-ranked Roadrunners won their fourteenth game in a row Saturday afternoon with an 73-56 win over the University of Mobile (Alabama) on campus at Bandy Gymnasium. With the conference victory, the Roadrunners improved to 21-1, 10-1 Southern States Athletic Conference. Mobile is now 8-12, 3-8 SSAC.
The Roadrunners celebrated Homecoming weekend before a large crowd in the intimate setting of Bandy Gymnasium, where the then-Dalton Junior College Roadrunners basketball team played in the 1960s and 1970s. On Saturday, Dalton State guard C.J. Perry led the team in scoring with 22 points while shooting 50% from the field. Leading scorer Randy Bell and point guard Sean Cranney had 15 points each.
The Roadrunners had a seven-point lead at halftime (34-27), and outscored Mobile 39-29 in the second half. The Dalton State defense limited Mobile to just 36.8% shooting (21-of-57) from the field and only 15% (3-of-20) from 3-point range.
Dalton State's next game is on the road Thursday against Blue Mountain College (Mississippi) at 8:30 p.m. EST. The Toppers are 11-8, 4-7 SSAC. The Roadrunners won the teams' first matchup in Dalton 83-75 on Jan. 9.
