Westside Middle School seventh-grader Justin Andrew intercepted two passes and broke up one and Hunter Martin and Luke Hensley scored on long touchdown runs Thursday to lead the unbeaten Rockets past Valley Point, 14-6.

After a scoreless first half, Martin capped a 50-yard, four-play drive with a 46-yard touchdown run on a fourth-and-four off-tackle play. Andrew ran for the two-point conversion, giving Westside (4-0) an 8-0 lead.

Valley Point (1-2-1) answered the Rockets’ touchdown with a 65-yard, eight-play drive that ended with quarterback Jacob Parsons sneaking in for the score from 1 yard out. Parsons hit three straight passes for a combined 38 yards — two to tailback Matt Cobb — to set up the touchdown.

But three plays after the ensuing kickoff, and one play deep into the fourth quarter, Westside’s Hensley zipped untouched 42 yards on a quick-hitter over tackle for the game’s final touchdown with 5:49 remaining.

“We beat a good football team,” Westside coach Galen Bell said. “They came right at us and our defense stepped up. We went to a 5-4 this week in an attempt to stop their big guys, and we went without a safety most of the time to stack up on the line of scrimmage.

“We wanted to force them to pass to try and beat us, and they almost did.”

Westside’s Hensley also had an interception and Daniel Kubin recorded a sack and fumble recovery on back-to-back plays to stop the Green Wave’s opening series.

Dalton 48, Gladden 6: Trey Beck tallied four touchdowns on runs of 34 and 6 yards, returned a kickoff 85 yards and raced to the end zone on a 46-yard punt return for the Cougars (4-0).

Dalton’s other scores came on Trey Bonds’ 1-yard run and Stephen Jones’ 6-yard scamper.

Jones had three conversion runs, Camden Moore two and Brady Willocks one.

Defensively, Roger Martinez caused a Gladden fumble and Cody Patterson recovered the ball.

Kendall Rymer scored on a 7-yard run for Gladen (0-4)

Eastbrook 6, New Hope 0: Eastbrook’s Ashton Storey got the game’s only touchdown on a 25-yard sweep play.

North Whitfield 28, Bagley 16: Alex Heard scored touchdowns on runs of 90, 50 and 40 yards for the Pioneers (3-1).

North Whitfield’s other TD was the result of defense. Adam Selby sacked the Bagley quarterback, forced a fumble and John Hembree recovered and ran 10 yards for the score.

Justin Pack ran 9 yards for a touchdown and Jonathan Lara returned a kickoff 55 yards for a score for the Braves (2-2). Jeremy Smith threw conversion passes to Brandon Flood and Cameron Witt.

Eighth grade

Westside 44, Valley Point 0: Zach Sloan and Miles Knox each scored two touchdowns for the Rockets (4-0).

Sloan scored on an 18-yard run and 37-yard pass reception from Tyler Shepard. Knox hit paydirt on runs of 30 and 23 yards.

Mason Woods scored from 18 yards out. Keith Teasley had a 5-yard touchdown run and two conversion runs while and Woods ran and caught a pass for two-point conversions.

Dalton 46, Gladden 0: Chris White scored two touchdowns on an 80-yard punt return and a 22-yard run to pace the Cougars (4-0).

Nick Sane scored twice on 3-yard runs while Charlie Wilson scored on a 48-yard run, Harris News tallied from 25 yards out and Santiago Nava caught a 10-yard scoring pass from Will Kiker.

Taylor Dunn had an interception, Kiker recovered a fumble , Toombs Norman blocked a punt the Dalton’s defense held Gladden without a first down.

New hope 26, Eastbrook 0: Garrett Smith had touchdown runs of 50 and 10 yards and added a conversion run to lead the Kodiaks (2-2) to the victory.

Jarrett Bruce had a 5-yard scoring run and Connor Hayes tallied from 12 yards out.

Bagley 40, North Whitfield 18: Chris Thompson scored three times on runs of 29, 26 and 45 yards for the Braves (3-1). Thompson returned an interception for a score but the play was negated by a penalty.

Blake Hammontree ran 64 yards for a score, Taylor Patterson went 15 yards for a TD and Jake White rambled 20 yards with a fumble recovery for the other touchdown.

Dustin Anderson had a conversion run and Patterson passed to Tyler Timms for one.

Taylor Gearhart threw three touchdown passes for the Pioneers (2-2). He hit Ethan Parker on two 50-yard scoring plays and tossed 20 yards to Connor Jones for the other touchdown. Jake Douglas had 100 yards rushing for the Pioneers, coach Jim Roderick said.
