The Valley Point Green Waves are one game from finishing off their second consecutive undefeated football season.

Valley Point’s Alex Clowers scored two touchdowns, including a 50-yard interception return on the game’s final play, and the Green Waves defeated the Pleasant Grove Eagles, 26-0, in the Mite 9-10 Division of the Whitfield County Recreation Department playoffs.

The Green Waves (9-0), the defending champions, will play the Dug Gap Grizzlies, who beat the Varnell Colts, 13-6, on Saturday at 10:15 a.m. in the Youth Bowl title game at Southeast High School.

“I knew we would have a good team this year because we had of our players back, plus we had some more players that gave us more size,” Valley Point coachVan Purkey said. “We like to play smashmouth football right up the middle of the field.”

In Midget Division (11-12) games, the Pleasant Grove Eagles defeated the Dug Gap Kodiaks, 7-0, and the New Hope Grizzlies beat the Westside Knights, 24-6, behind four touchdowns by O’Shea Hill.

The Eagles and Grizzlies play for the Midget championship Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

Quarterback Austin Purkey connected with Alex Clowers on a 34-yard touchdown play in the second quarter to start the Green Waves’ scoring. Clowers ran for the extra point, giving the Green Waves a 7-0 lead in the game played at Valley Point Middle School.

Tyson Cooper ran 29 yards for Valley Point’s second touchdown, two plays after Kyle Whaley recovered a Pleasant Grove fumble at the Eagles’ 34.

Late in the fourth quarter Purkey ran 15 yards for a touchdown and Clowers capped the scoring by returning his interception for a TD as time ran out.

“They’re a pretty good team,” Pleasant Grove coach Eric Kyer said. “We knew they were a well-balanced team, but we had a good season.”

Pleasant Grove finished 5-2. The Eagles’ Levi Wilson had an outstanding defensive game. Seth Short had several nice runs, including a 16-yarder in the fourth quarter.

n Dug Gap Grizzlies 13, Varnell Colts 6: At North Whitfield Middle School, Thomas Delay ran 50 yards for a touchdown and Nate Bryant threw a TD pass to Lyle Durham for the Grizzlies. Blake Foster scored a PAT.

Varnell’s score came on a 50-yard run by Andy Whisenant.

Dug Gap coach Todd Jones said his entire defense played well.

For Varnell, coach Chris Shiflett singled out Whisenant on offense and Tyler Clayton on defense.

Midget 11-12

n Pleasant Grove Eagles 7, Dug Gap Kodiaks 0: At North Whitfield Middle, Pleasant Grove’s Silas Ledford threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Case Mathis for the game’s only touchdown. Mathis ran for the one-point conversion.

Ruben Vigil was Pleasant Grove’s top offensive player while Kaleb King stood out on defense.

Cole Calfee was the top offensive player for Dug Gap while Robert Hardaway played solid defense.

n New Hope Grizzlies 24, Westside Knights 6: Hill tallied on runs of 33, 56 and 9 yards and on the final play of the game following a New Hope kickoff, Westside tried numerous laterals to keep the game going, but Hill recovered a fumble and zipped 15 yards for a TD for the Grizzlies.

Brandon Dale scored Westside’s touchdown on a 4-yard run. That tied the game at 6 at halftime. Dale and Saul Lara had fumble recoveries for the Knights.

Admission to Saturday’s championship games is $1 for adults and 50 cents for students, with proceeds going to area middle school athletic programs.
